My Psychotherapeutic Approach
As a licensed psychologist, my psychotherapeutic style is warm, reflective, and personal. It is very important to the success of therapy that people feel safe, relaxed, and open, and I do my best to create such an atmosphere. I endeavor to create a safe therapeutic environment through supportive listening and empathy to enable you to talk about patterns in your life that are causing you distress. People frequently say that they appreciate my non-judgmental and accepting attitude, and comment on how safe they feel to be themselves in our sessions.
In addition to fostering a comfortable, trusting therapeutic relationship, I pay particular attention to developing an understanding of my patients’ problems, and to investigate and clarify what went astray in their lives to create their current issues. Often people blame themselves unfairly for their difficulties, and it can be very relieving to understand that these issues typically resulted from multiple factors, many of which were out of their control.
I work collaboratively with you so we can understand together your underlying issues. While I am an expert on psychological, mental, and physiological processes, you are the expert on you so collaboration is essential. Working together, you will better understand your feelings and become more aware of your actions and the reasons for them. This collaborative partnership brings about changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This collaboration may give you tools to cope with specific problems. It may assist you in finding your strength to handle difficulties. It can help you make changes in your life. It can be a time of self-exploration, of your unfulfilled potential, and can touch upon how you find meaning in life.
While I mainly use psychodynamic psychotherapy, I also use various clinical interventions, which may include: psychoeducation, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral treatments, play therapy for children, teens, adults, and families, support for medication referrals, mindfulness, family systems theory, narrative theory, interpersonal and relational therapies, and brief or long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. My clinical work is developmentally informed and influenced particularly by object-relations and attachment theory. I recognize the importance of one’s early experiences and their effect on current functioning.
I believe the process of change requires an approach that takes into consideration biological, psychological, spiritual, and social factors affecting your mental health. I tailor what I offer to each patient. I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. I customize my way of working to who you are as the client, to what your needs are, and to what suits you as an individual. I help clients build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to achieving. Furthermore, because people are much more than their symptoms or personal life challenges, I am not solely concerned with what is not “working” for you, but I am also fascinated by your strengths, potential, creativity, and wholeness.
